Posted in: Interview Tips , Interview: Georgetown , School: Georgetown Check out the latest addition to the Clear Admit Wiki, a free online resource for MBA applicants to share their experiences with the admissions process! This Round 1 candidate for Georgetown / McDonough shared the following interview experience with an adcom member:
“I was invited to interview for R1. I did not attend any classes or other sessions. I met with the Adcom woman for roughly 15 minutes. It was a blind interview (the interviewer had no previous knowledge of me or my application), and was very laid back. I was told it was “your interview”.
The interview started with the typical “Share a little about yourself, your life story, how you ended up here”. This lasted 5 – 8 minutes. I didn’t want to bore the woman to death and it seemed natural to move through this quickly.
Next were the common questions:
Why Georgetown? Why now?

In case you missed it, there was a great piece in both the print and online versions of the Washington Post this past weekend on MBA admissions. The piece, entitled “Would you climb any mountain to get into MBA program of your dreams?” ran in Sunday’s Post and featured quotes and input from Clear Admit co-founder Graham Richmond on how applicants to top MBA programs can help make themselves stand out among the thousands and thousands of applications the very best schools receive.
One of the most important things is to understand who will be reading your application, Richmond told the Post. “The people reading the file are more like your high school English teacher than the colleague sitting next to you at an investment bank,” he said, adding that they are more interested in getting a good sense of who you are than your business experience.

Posted in: Essay Topics , School: Georgetown Georgetown’s MBA application essay questions for the 2011-2012 admissions season consist of four required responses totaling a maximum of 3.5 pages of text. The topics covered in these question focus largely on the applicant’s career goals (and require a high level of specificity and reflection on this subject), and also touch upon community service and the core of the applicant’s professional and personal identity. Georgetown specifies that all essays should be double spaced and written in 12pt font.
Let’s take a closer look at each of the program’s questions:
Essay 1: State your short-term career goal immediately following graduation from the Georgetown MBA program. What skills have you developed on which you will build? What skills will you need to develop? (1 page) While it’s fairly typical for MBA programs to inquire about a candidate’s post-MBA plans, it’s a bit unusual for a program to isolate the applicant’s short- and long-term objectives in separate essays. Further, McDonough’s inquiry about existing and to-be-developed skills requires a very high level of clarity about the exact job function they are hoping to work in after graduating from business school. Candidates would therefore do well to provide an example job title and even to name one or two organizations for which they would like to perform this job, as this level of specificity will facilitate the inventory of skills that Georgetown requests in its follow-on questions here. And of course, though the prompt doesn’t explicitly ask for it, a few comments about the ways two years in the McDonough MBA program would help to bridge the gap between your current and needed skill sets would be highly appropriate here.

Posted in: Interview: Georgetown , School: Georgetown , Wiki Wednesdays Welcome back to Wiki Wednesdays, in which we feature MBA interview reports that have recently been added to the Clear Admit Wiki, an online repository for applicants to share their MBA admissions experiences. Today we’re highlighting an account of a Round 3 interview with a first-year student sent to us by a candidate for Georgetown / McDonough:
“I was invited to interview for R3. Since I was going to be taking a day off to go to Washington D.C., I opted to sit in on a finance class. The student assigned to me was very helpful in giving me her insights on why she chose Georgetown over her other choices.
My interview was with a first year student. Because Georgetown shares the interviewer’s name in advance, I was able to look him up and get insight on the student clubs he was involved in on campus.
Interview lasted about 40 minutes. Here are details:
Blind interview (I was asked to bring in a copy of my resume) Tell me about yourself (resume walkthrough). How is an MBA important in attaining your short/long term goals? Why an MBA now (why leave current job)? What did I like about Georgetown? What do I do in my free time? Difficult situation I had to navigate through. What student organizations I would get involved in and why? What position will I aim for in the organization?

Posted in: Interview Tips , Interview: Georgetown , School: Georgetown Check out the latest addition to the Clear Admit Wiki, a free online resource for MBA applicants to share their experiences with the admissions process! This Round 2 candidate for Georgetown / McDonough shared the following interview experience with an alum:
“I interviewed with an Admissions Director and she was very cordial and friendly. We met off-campus in a Chicago hotel. The interview was for 30 minutes. I arrived few minutes early and she came out to greet me. We sat in the lobby in plush comfy chairs. It was difficult to hold my resume book in front and talk, but I adjusted and soon became comfortable.
She asked me:
What do you want to do after an MBA? Tell me about your career path. Why now? Why Georgetown? Have you visited Georgetown?

Posted in: Interview Tips , School: Georgetown A Round 2 candidate for Georgetown / McDonough shared this interview experience in the Clear Admit Wiki, a free online resource for MBA applicants to share the questions they have faced in the interview step of the admissions process. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this robust resource so far! If you’d like to help your fellow applicants by adding your experiences, please send us your interview field report and we’ll post it to the Clear Admit Wiki. Without further ado, here is the recent interview report:
“I interviewed with an admissions officer from Georgetown a couple of weeks ago. Please see below a summary of the interview.
Date/Admissions Round: February 14 / Round 2
Description of visit and/or interview atmosphere: Off-campus interview with an Admissions officer in New York City. We met in the (loud, dimly lit) lobby area of the W Hotel in Midtown Manhattan. The tone of the actual interview was very laidback, with successive questions building on my own responses.
Type of interview (alum vs. adcom, blind vs. application-based): Admissions officer. Blind (and I’m pretty sure she had not reviewed my resume beforehand).
List of interview questions:
Walk me through how you went from your undergraduate major to your current profession. What are your career goals? [After a "big picture" response:] How specifically would you achieve that? Why Georgetown? Have you visited? Describe a time when you’ve had to a lead a team. What would your supervisors say your biggest weakness is? What would the people you manage say? Any questions?
Commentary (What did you think of the interview? What surprised you? What didn’t surprise you? What might you conclude about the school based on this experience?): I think this confirms my perception of Georgetown’s “vibe” – specifically that it looks for people who will fit into the collaborative ethos and mix in well with a diverse, global student body. We also spoke about the program’s upward momentum in the rankings and with recruiters. All in all, a pretty good conversation that confirmed my interest in the program.”
Best of luck to everyone undergoing Round 2 interviews! Check out our line of Interview Guides for an extra edge in your admissions process!
