London Business School Scores High in Terms of Research Quality

London_Business_School_logoLondon Business School (LBS) received the highest rating ever achieved by any department of business and management for the quality of its research output, according to the UK-wide Research Excellence Framework (REF) published earlier this month.

The report revealed that 55.3 percent of LBS research output received the top 4* rating, which stands for world-leading. The other ratings are 3* (internationally excellent), 2* (internationally recognized), 1* (nationally recognized) or 0 (unclassified).

Conducted jointly by the higher education councils for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the REF’s goal is to assess the quality and impact of research at UK higher education institutions in all disciplines. With more than half of its research deemed world leading, LBS bested all other departments of business and management surveyed as part of the REF.

Institutions can select which of their faculty members to enter for assessment under the REF rules. “We chose to submit them all – in line with the school’s belief that engaging in world-leading research is a fundamental requirement for all faculty,” read a release on the LBS website. “The evaluation is therefore testament to the uniformly high quality of London Business School faculty,” it continued.

The REF submission was led by a taskforce made up of LBS professors and administrators, chaired by Professor of Organizational Behavior Madan Pillutla. “Creating world-class research that directly influences business leaders, policy makers and other researchers across the world is what we do at the school,” Pillutla said. “These rankings show that we do this very well.”
