Duke’s Fuqua School of Business Launches New One-Year Management Program in China, U.S.

The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University last week announced the launch of a new one-year master’s degree program in management, which will feature three terms of study on Duke’s North Carolina campus and two terms at the new Duke Kunshan University (DKU), near Shanghai.

Duke recently received final approval from China’s Ministry of Education to establish DKU, a joint venture between Duke, Wuhan University and the city of Kunshan. The new campus, which is scheduled to open in July 2014, will offer a master’s degree program in global health (through the Duke Global Health Institute) and a proposed degree in medical physics, as well as the new year-long master of management studies (MMS: DKU) degree. DKU will also serve as the Chinese base for Fuqua’s global executive MBA program, the Financial Times reports.

“We live in a world marked by leadership deficits and global disruption,” Fuqua Dean Bill Boulding said in a statement. “As a business school, we therefore need to be embedded and connected in key regions around the world to prepare our students to address global business challenges.

Fuqua launched another one-year master of management degree program in 2009, called the Master of Management Studies: Foundations of Business (MMS: FOB). The curriculum for the two programs will be largely the same, the school announced, with location being the main difference.

The MMS:DKU program gives participating students cultural immersion in China as part of the course, whereas the MMA: FOB is based solely in the United States, though participants can choose to include an optional international Global Academic Travel Experience as part of that program. Both programs are designed for students applying directly from undergraduate courses, before obtaining work experience.

In launching these newer one-year master of management degree programs, Fuqua and some other peer U.S. schools have begun to match offerings more traditionally offered by European business schools, the FT notes. Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management launched its own pre-experience one-year master of management program this year.

Fuqua will manage the admissions process for the new MMS: DKU program, and its first application deadline will be November 5th. Tuition for the MMS: DKU program will be commensurate with other one-year master’s programs and will be posted once approved by appropriate oversight agencies, the school announced.
