Campus Chronicles: The Wharton Journal
Feb 7, 2013 | 0 comments
Welcome back to Campus Chronicles, our weekly page-skimming of the news at top business programs. This a week we parse the pages of The Wharton Journal, published by students at The University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business.

In March, Wharton students will spend four days helping homeowners with their home repairs in West Philadelphia for Repair Together Philadelphia (RTP). Started in 1988 by Whartonites seeking to forge stronger connections between Huntsman Hall and its surrounding West Philadelphia community, RTP is part of a network of national organizations providing home-repair services in order to revitalize neighborhoods. Skilled contractors, be relieved, will guide Wharton volunteers through the technical details of home repair. Additionally, this year RTP’s founder Robert Bellinger (WG’89) has matched the RTP team with a donor who has pledged to match up to $25,000 in donations, which will be collected by cluster leaders leading up to the event.
In late January, Daniel Pink spoke at Wharton as part of the Authors at Wharton Speaker Series. Pink’s latest book, To Sell is Human: The Surprising Truth about Moving Others, argues that regardless of career function, much of business consists of “non-sales selling”—convincing others to give you something in exchange for something you have. Attunement, buoyancy and clarity—the “ABCs of selling”—are the three ingredients that Pink claims make for a maximally persuasive pitch. Pink, the head speechwriter for former Vice President Al Gore, is followed in the Speaker Series by Anne-Marie Slaughter, a prominent political scientist who also writes on gender issues, and Jonathan Haidt, a Professor at NYU’s Stern School of Business.
Finally, Wharton has opened a new Student Life center at 2401 Walnut Street, featuring conference rooms, televisions, interview spaces and expansive views of center city Philadelphia. The center is on the eighth floor of what was formerly called the Rosenbluth Building, which dates from the 1920s. In January, first-year students were invited to preview the space at an Open House, although the rooms aren’t expected to be fully furnished and operational until February 15th. According to the Journal, that hasn’t stopped some Whartonites, who have already set up camp and are utilizing the space as their home base in center city.
