Campus Chronicles: The Cold Call Chronicle

Hello and welcome back to Campus Chronicles, where we catch up on the news at top business programs. After the summer hiatus we’re flipping open and smoothing out a copy of The Cold Call Chronicle, penned by students at the Darden School of Business.

The 2012-2013 Darden Cup kicked off on Friday, August 31st as defending champion Section E defeated Section B in the final of the Softball Tournament. Sections battle annually for the right to hoist the reportedly “ridiculously giant” Cup by participating in athletic, academic and service challenges over the course of the year.  The event builds ties between first year and second year students and fosters broader community spirit by rewarding points for participation—by students, faculty and family members alike. Over 600 players and fans turned out for the opening Softball Tournament, which places Section E in the catbird seat heading into the rest of the year.

Erika Herz, Manager of the Darden Sustainability Program, has organized a community petition requesting that a full environmental impact study be completed before the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) builds a “Western Bypass” route cutting through the Darden campus.  A stand of trees behind a Darden classroom building would need to be removed to make way for the Bypass. Terry de Guzman, Darden’s Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Administration, is working on behalf of the school to address its concerns with VDOT.  In addition to the potential environmental effects, the new route could impact Darden students by causing traffic congestion and noise concerns.

Finally, the Darden Military Association hosted a memorial on this year’s anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Second year Kevin White ’13 gave the address, touching on the sustained impact of the event more than a decade on and subsequent tragedies that have taken place across the globe since. Darden’s Cold Call Chorus sang the national anthem at this year’s commemoration.
