Trivia Tuesday: Darden’s Core Curriculum
Welcome to July’s first edition of Trivia Tuesday, where we discuss special offerings that help differentiate leading MBA programs. This week we’re opening up the Clear Admit Guide to UVA / Darden to learn more about the core curriculum at Darden.
“During the first year, all Darden students take the same 10 core courses, several of which last for more than one term. The first-year curriculum is designed to teach students to apply concepts from multiple disciplines in order to solve complex management problems; it provides students with a common foundation in business fundamentals and an integrated perspective on general management before they move on to electives in the second year.
“Each of the five terms of core coursework is organized around a unifying theme. For example, the three core courses Ethics, Decision Analysis and Financial Management and Policies combine to form a unit titled “Creating Value for Stakeholders.” At the conclusion of the fifth term, first-year students complete a capstone project intended to tie all of the required curriculum’s core concepts together.
“Because Darden’s core is designed as a year-long, integrated academic program, students are not permitted to waive courses based on prior knowledge or experience. As at Harvard Business School, the Darden faculty believes that the case method of instruction has the potential to provide new insights and challenges regardless of a student’s background in the subject. First-year students typically cover 12 cases each week – one case per course on each of the four class days – and spend their first few terms looking forward to the 100 Case Party, a school-sponsored, ’80s-themed bash that marks this late-October milestone.”
