Trivia Tuesday: Yale SOM’s Center for Business and the Environment

Welcome back to Trivia Tuesday, where we feature the special programs and opportunities that distinguish the top business schools from their peers.  Today we’re featuring a selection from the Clear Admit Guide to Yale SOMto share information about the school’s Center for Business and the Environment.

“The Center for Business and the Environment at Yale (CBEY) provides a foundation for Yale SOM’s work to foster environmentally responsible business practices. Serving as the bridge between Yale University’s SOM and School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, the center provides administrative support for a joint degree program between the two schools, drives new research in sustainability, and brings a wide array of speakers and conferences to campus. In addition, CBEY offers more than $200,000 for faculty and student research in areas such as environmentally beneficial entrepreneurship and venture seed funding.

“One of the center’s newest and most popular initiatives, the Carbon Finance Speaker Series, brings market practitioners to the Yale campus to discuss carbon markets and the corporate response to developments in those markets. Though the series began four years ago with the general theme of carbon markets and finance, it has since narrowed its focus to address specific energy-related issues. In 2010-2011, CBEY chose to partner with the MIT Energy Club and the Yale SOM and Forestry and Environmental Studies energy clubs to produce a free webinar series focused on energy efficiency and the Department of Energy’s BetterBuildings Program. Conducted weekly throughout the academic year, this Blueprint for Efficiency focused on four key areas: technology, policy, community engagement and financial incentives for investment.

“CBEY also manages the Sabin Environmental Venture Prize, an annual event that awards up to $25,000 to the faculty member or student with the best idea for a profitable environmentally focused business. As part of the competition, participants have access to feedback from the judges, faculty mentoring, a series of relevant workshops and a speaker series. To be eligible for the prize, Yale professors and students submit a general description of their ideas, the environmental problem they address and a brief market overview and value proposition to the event’s organizers by early March. Finalists present their idea to a panel of judges and the public at the end of March, and the winner is announced later that day.”
