Campus Chronicles: The Bottom Line

Hello and welcome to Campus Chronicles, where we at Clear Admit bring you news straight from the articles of MBA students.  Today’s compilation of events comes from The Bottom Line, the newspaper created by the MBA community at Columbia Business School.

A team of four first-year MBA students won first place at last month’s Leeds Net Impact Case Competition.  At the closing banquet in Boulder, Colorado, the CBS team was awarded the top prize of $9,000 based on the students’ recommendations across several rounds of judging.  The competition featured a case grounded in the challenges of promoting both business and sustainability, and the first round of competition included a case that required participants to address the concerns of a Pennsylvania town feeling the effects of local fracking practices.  The Leeds Net Impact Case Competition was sponsored by Encana, an energy producer and natural gas company based in North America.

CBS’s Kajal Sanghrajka ’12 has launched a start-up focused on eyewear.  Though without a formal name as of yet, the firm currently known as “EyeStyle by Kajal” is set to launch its first curated collection in New York City this week.  Sanghrajka intends to incorporate a philanthropic component into her vintage eyewear business and eventually hopes to launch her own line of eyeglasses.  In late 2011, Sanghrajka began taking part of the Greenhouse Program at CBS, a program from which she says she has already benefitted immensely.

The MBA Media and Entertainment Conference was recently held at the Skirball Center, focusing on an underlying theme of the opportunities in new technology and featuring two keynote addresses.  The keynote speakers were Reed Hastings, the co-founder and CEO of Netflix, and Peter Liguori, the former COO of Discovery Networks, and the day included many panel discussions as well.  The MBA programs represented in the audience included not only Columbia students but also visitors from MIT Sloan, Fuqua, Stern and Wharton.  Hastings shared his experiences of taking Netflix into mature markets while Liguori’s remarks included thoughts on brand creation and managerial best practices.
