Trivia Tuesday: The Kenan-Flagler Center for Sustainable Enterprise

It’s time again for Trivia Tuesday in which we profile program elements that differentiate the leading MBA programs from their peers. This week we’re taking a peek into the Clear Admit Guide to UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School to learn more about their Center for Sustainable Enterprise.

“Founded in 2001, the Center for Sustainable Enterprise (CSE) aims to provide educational resources and consulting services for environmentally-friendly enterprises throughout the United States. Its mission is to help leaders in the local and national business communities rework their business models in terms of a “triple bottom line” – to measure their success not only in terms of financial profitability, but also in terms of ecological integrity and social equity.

“The CSE is perhaps most familiar to Kenan-Flagler students for the enrichment concentration it offers in the field of Sustainable Enterprise. This four-course, cross-disciplinary concentration is not designed to stand alone; rather, it aims to supplement more traditional, career-oriented coursework by providing students with the intellectual framework to take a sustainable perspective on their future careers. The CSE reports that roughly 20% of the MBA student body completes the Sustainable Enterprise concentration each year.

“Beginning in 2004, the center has also offered a consulting program through which first-year MBA students intern with organizations in the local community, preparing innovative business recommendations that are at once socially responsible, environmentally sustainable and economically viable. In 2009, the CSE launched the Business Accelerator for Sustainable Enterprise (BASE), a second initiative aimed at putting its triple-bottom-line philosophy into practice. The goal of BASE is to speed the growth and strengthen the impact of socially- and environmentally-focused ventures across the state of North Carolina, providing mentoring services and pro bono consulting services spearheaded by teams of Kenan-Flagler students. In addition to these programs, the CSE hosts year-round forums, career fairs, conferences and lecture series to foster discussion on the topic of sustainability in business.”
