University of Chicago Booth Admissions Director Shares Round Two Update

In his first post to the Booth Insider blog in several weeks, Chicago Booth Admissions Director Kurt Ahlm provided a glimpse into the second round of the school’s application cycle. Mid-decisions were released on February 16th, and Ahlm’s team is now finishing Round Two interviews and moving toward the March 16th final decision date for that round.

“It’s amazing how fast time goes by when you’re reading through one application after another and each story is as compelling as the next,” Ahlm wrote in his post last week. Now, as interview evaluation reports get added to second round candidates’ files, his team is busy reviewing applications for a third time. “While they begin to provide final recommendations on whether to Admit, Waitlist, or Deny a candidate, I sit at the end of the evaluation line – responsible for making final decisions and, ultimately, building the class,” Ahlm writes.

Providing more of a glimpse into the admissions process, Ahlm shared that his team has no formula for determining who gets in and who doesn’t. “At the end of the day, it is fit that proves to be our final litmus test,” he says. To help spot the candidates who truly embody the Chicago Booth values, each admitted student is reviewed by no fewer than five members of the admissions committee, including by a student fellow, first admissions director, interviewer, second admissions director and Ahlm himself.

“Honestly, making these decisions isn’t easy,” Ahlm says, noting that Chicago Booth draws an extremely talented application pool. And at the Round Two stage it gets even more difficult, he continued. “Now, when you take this competitive pool and add a very successful Round One as well as an accomplished group of Round One waitlist candidates to the mix, our challenge for admitting the right group of applicants gets even tougher.”
