Yale SOM Now Accepting Applications for Summer Pre-MBA Leadership Program
The Yale School of Management (SOM) began accepting applications earlier this month for its Pre-MBA Leadership Program, a two-week summer program designed to attract promising college students and recent graduates of color who might not otherwise be considering management education. This year’s program will take place on Yale’s New Haven campus from June 13th through 26th.
The program, now in its second year, is modeled after Yale’s integrated MBA curriculum and taught by Yale SOM faculty. Sessions on data analysis, economics, accounting, finance, marketing and strategy help develop business fundamentals. Meanwhile, exercises taken from Yale SOM’s Leadership Development Program for first-year MBA students call on participants to think about who they are, what they value and how use those values to achieve their personal and professional goals. Participants will also take part in networking receptions and receive one-on-one assistance developing their résumés and preparing for job interviews.
“Our goal is to identify potential leaders, give them leadership skills to build on, and get them inspired about how they can use those skills to make a positive difference in the world,” Shelley Clifford, Yale SOM’s deputy director of admissions and coordinator of the Pre-MBA Leadership Program, said in a statement announcing the program’s second year. The inaugural program was a big success, drawing students from historically Black colleges and universities, Hispanic serving institutions and tribal colleges and from a wide variety of academic fields, Clifford added.
Applications, which may be submitted through the program website, are due by March 18th. Prospective applicants must submit two essays, two letters of recommendation, college transcripts and test scores. Ideal candidates are college undergraduates of color in their sophomore or junior years and in non-traditional pre-MBA academic tracks, such as liberal arts, science and engineering, though a limited number of college seniors and recent graduates will also be accepted.
Forty participants will be admitted to the highly selective program, and the cost of tuition, room and board, program materials and application fees will all be covered by Yale SOM. A $250 deposit is required but will be refunded upon successful completion of the program. Participants are responsible for their own travel to and from New Haven as well as a few meals and incidental expenses.
