Yale SOM Conference to Examine Innovation in Philanthropy

The future of philanthropy will be the focus of a conference tomorrow at the Yale School of Management (SOM), which is expected to draw national leaders in the philanthropic sector as well as academic experts, business leaders and grant-making professionals.

The school’s fifth annual philanthropy conference, the December 4th event will look for new ways to seize opportunities and leverage strengths in a sector that has a wider range of resources available to it than ever before. Conference speakers and attendees will examine emerging trends in grant-making, including cross-sector collaborations, social investment strategies and innovative philanthropic frameworks geared toward developing long-term scalable solutions.

The full-day conference will feature a keynote address by Gara La Marche, president and CEO of the Atlantic Philanthropies, an organization built upon founder Chuck Feeney’s philosophy of “giving while living.”  Matthew Bishop, American business editor of the Economist and co-author of Philanthrocapitalism, will deliver a welcoming address on the business of philanthropy.

The conference also will include three panel discussions featuring 15 dynamic speakers from throughout the philanthropy sector, including Melissa Berman, president and CEO of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors; Jeffrey Heil, chief investment officer of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation; and Franck Wiebe, chief economist of the Millennium Challenge Corporation. The panels, intended to engage attendees in a dialogue about philanthropy’s future, will focus on leveraging resources across sectors, alternative investment strategies and frameworks for strategic philanthropy.
