Columbia Business School Class of 2011 Brings Diversity, Accomplishment

Columbia Business School (CBS) welcomed its new incoming class last week as 121 EMBA and 554 MBA students arrived on campus for orientation. Admitted students to the Class of 2011 were selected from almost 6,000 applicants to the school’s MBA program. More than 120 of those admitted graduated cum laude from their colleges, and 20 are members of Phi Betta Kappa. Additionally, the class holds 68 master’s degrees, two JDs and one PhD.

Beyond its achievement levels, CBS is also pleased by the diversity of the incoming class. Collectively, its members speak more than 50 languages, including Sanskrit, Tagalog, Yoruba and Serbian. Women represent 35 percent of the class, and 41 percent were born outside of the United States.

Finally, the Class of 2011 also brings a range of interesting work and other experiences. Among its members are former White House interns, hedge fund managers, published authors, television producers and entrepreneurs with successful ventures both here and abroad. Further rounding things out are an army ranger and Bronze Star recipient, the founder of the largest organic vegetable processing factory in northwestern China, a finalist on American Idol and a three-time Grammy award–winning music producer who has worked with Kanye West and John Legend.
