Searches for New Deans on at Kellogg, Yale SOM
Jul 17, 2009 | 0 comments
Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management and Yale’s School of Management (SOM) each issued announcements this week regarding their searches for new deans. At Kellogg, a search committee has been named to identify candidates to replace Dean Dipak Jain, who steps down in September. Meanwhile, at Yale SOM the faculty head of a search committee formed there in April provided an update on the effort to find a replacement for Dean Sharon Oster, who plans to step down from her current position as interim dean at the end of the 2009-2010 school year.
Northwestern’s Provost Daniel Linzer announced on July 15th that the search committee for Kellogg’s new dean will be chaired by Janice Eberly, the John L. and Helen Kellogg Professor of Finance. The 12-member committee will be comprised of professors and other faculty members from Kellogg, current students, alumni and deans from other schools within Northwestern. It will begin its work immediately, working closely with the Kellogg community through the summer and early fall to identify potential prospects for the position, Linzer said.

Meanwhile, at Yale SOM, the head of a search committee formed earlier this spring to find a replacement for Dean Sharon Oster provided an update of the search process to date.
In April, Yale President Richard Levin appointed James Baron, the William S. Beinecke Professor of Management and Professor of Sociology, to head the faculty search committee, along with seven other SOM and Yale faculty. Oster, who assumed the role of interim dean when former Dean Joel Podolny left for Apple University in November 2008, plans to step down at the end of the 2009-2010 school year to return to her role as a senior member of the SOM faculty.
Baron met with SOM staff earlier this month to provide an update on the search process, sharing that the search is still in its early stages and that the committee is considering a wide variety of potential candidates. Baron and the committee will consult with students, faculty, staff, alumni and leaders of other business schools as part of the search, and Yale has also engaged an executive search firm and advertised the position both domestically and internationally.
“With all that the school has accomplished in the last few years, including the development of the integrated MBA curriculum, there is a strong foundation to build on,” Baron said in a statement. The committee also welcomes suggestions and comments about the dean search. They can be sent to deansearch@som.yale.edu.
