A recent article on the Kellogg School of Management website detailed an exciting opportunity some of the school’s students experienced earlier this spring – traveling to Omaha, NE, to meet investor and businessman Warren Buffett.
In early May, four Kellogg students got the rare chance to participate in Berkshire Hathaway’s annual shareholder meeting. The trip arose as part of Kellogg’s Asset Management Practicum, an experimental learning program in which students are responsible for investing about $2 million of the Kellogg endowment. Current investments include shares in Berkshire Hathaway.
Four Kellogg students participated in Berkshire Hathaway’s annual shareholder meeting in early May. The students were enrolled in the Kellogg School’s Asset Management Practicum, an experiential learning program that provides students an opportunity to invest about $2 million of the Kellogg endowment, with some investments in Berkshire Hathaway shares.
Participating students raved about the experience. “It’s one of those special occasions to see one of the best investors in our time and hear his point of view,” said Enzo D’Angelo ’09.
The question-and-answer session between Buffett and his business partner Charlie Munger went on for five hours and took a sober tone in light of the economy and Berkshire’s stock performance. “It was comforting to know that the best investor still focuses on fundamental business analysis and investing basics,” D’Angelo continued.
A few weeks earlier, about two dozen Kellogg students also traveled to Omaha to join students from other business schools for a personal meeting with Buffett. These students toured Nebraska Furniture Mart, an Omaha retailer Buffett invested in 20 years ago, and lunched with the “Oracle of Omaha.”
“The students got to question Warren Buffett directly – no holds barred,” said Ravi Jagannathan, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange/John F. Sandner Professor of Finance and co-director of the Financial Institutions and Markets Research Center, who accompanied the students on the trip.
Kellogg student Jackie Spring ’09 enjoyed seeing Buffett in action after having read about him extensively. “What struck me was how down-to-earth he was and how passionate he is,” she said. “At 78, he’s still passionate about his career and it’s very rare to see that.”
