‘Tis the season to raise funds for nonprofit and public sector internships. Earlier this week we reported on an auction at Yale School of Management (SOM) for its Nonprofit Fund, which raised $44,000 to augment the low or nonexistent salaries of students who choose summer internships in the nonprofit sector. Yesterday, Tuck’s School of Business at Dartmouth shared the results of its own auction, Tuck GIVES (Grants to Interns and Volunteers for the Environment and Society), which brought in $49,000 for Tuck’s nonprofit and public sector interns.
Now in its ninth year, the Tuck GIVES auction took place April 7th through 9th. This year, the student-run event featured a masquerade ball and a combination of silent and live auctions. Hot-ticket items in the silent auction included a day of lessons and sailing at Dartmouth’s sailing center, dinner at a professor’s home and a flight with Tuck’s resident pilot. For the live auction, bidding was most active around a weekend in Bermuda, Tuck Night at Dean Steven Lubrano’s house and a Mexican dinner complete with games and dancing.
“Tuck GIVES exemplifies to me what separates Tuck from other business schools,” Ann Naughton, a second-year student and member of the Tuck GIVES leadership team, said in a statement. “It demonstrates the infectious spirit of the entire Tuck community in its overall desire to leave the world a better place,” she continued. Other second-year students heading up the Tuck GIVES leadership team included Jon Edwards, Michael Giordano and Margo Lalonde.
Last year’s auction, which raised $67,400, funded nine student internship positions in agriculture, healthcare, public education and other industries. Some of the organizations students worked with included Asian Development Bank in the Philippines, World Experience for Georgia in the Republic of Georgia, Aquaya Institute in Kenya, Communities in Schools in Washington D.C. and the Vermont Agency of Agriculture.
