Happy February! Today we take a look at NYU Stern’s newspaper, Opportunity, to see what MBA students are talking about on campus.
Stern’s Media, Entertainment and Sports Association (MESA) held their annual Los Angeles Trek at the beginning of January to introduce interested students to career opportunities in the entertainment industry. Students not only had the opportunity to visit Sony Pictures Entertainment and The Walt Disney Company, but also Activision, Fox Interactive Media – Myspace, Warner Brothers Entertainment Group, The Fox Sports Network and Fox Searchlight Pictures. During each visit, students listened to talks by the leaders in the industry, a good number of which are Stern alums. Lexine Wong, a Stern Alum an Senior Executive Vice President of Worldwide Marketing for Sony Pictures’ Home Entertainment Division, welcomed students to the Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Headquarters on the first day of the Trek.
The following days of the Trek comprised energetic presentation and networking sessions, and students met with a few of the Video Gaming industry’s Brand Managers, including those who manage Guitar Hero, Call of Duty, and World of Warcraft. Students heard from a Warner Brothers executive, who stressed that the entertainment industry “requires a great deal of passion,” stating, “Don’t follow the ‘image’ of a career – know the day-to-day realities when you are making a career decision.” By the end of the Trek, students were not only increasingly excited about discovering their passions in the entertainment industry, but also familiar with what each position entailed and what steps they needed to take to obtain these positions.
Opportunity also reports the success of the Food Fight, a fundraiser organized by the Stern Community Service Committee for the Food Bank of NY. Stern students raised $2,845.86 in cash and food donations, enabling the Food Bank to give 14,238 meals to the city’s hungry. The Food Fight is only one of the many community service events that Stern MBA students promote and participate in. At the beginning of the semester, each first-year block worked with various organizations, including the Food Bank of NY, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, New York Cares Day, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC, as part of the MBA Challenge. Meanwhile, second years are also active in community service and helped with the Alzheimer Walk as well as organized the Charity Ball to support the East River Development Alliance (ERDA). The Stern Community Service Committee is excited for upcoming events that will continue to enable Stern students to make a difference in their community.
Stay tuned next week for a new edition of Campus Chronicles!
