Yale: Where Faith, Management and Tony Blair Meet

Former United Kingdom Prime Minister Tony Blair has been appointed the Howland Distinguished Fellow at Yale University for the 2008-2009 academic year, Yale President Richard Levin announced last week. During his fellowship, Blair will lead a seminar on faith and globalization, which will be jointly coordinated by the Yale School of Management (SOM) and the Yale Divinity School.

Blair’s appointment will help SOM further its emphasis on values-based leadership, according to SOM Dean Joel Podolny. “I anticipate that his course will focus on an important dimension of values-based leadership; and he himself has embodied that model of leadership in his life and his career,” Podolny said.

Concurrent with leading his seminar, Blair also will participate in a number of events around campus with other members of the Yale faculty. The Deans of SOM and the Divinity School are currently working with the former prime minister to finalize details of the program.

Blair’s efforts at Yale relate to the work of the Tony Blair Faith Foundation, which he will launch later this year. The foundation will promote understanding of major faiths around the globe as well as work to increase understanding of the role of faith in the modern world.

Blair has continued to be active in public life since stepping down from his 10-year tenure as UK prime minister in 2007. His principal interests have been his Middle East role for the United States, United Nations, Russia and the European Union as the Quartet Representative and helping the Palestinians to prepare for statehood as part of the international community’s effort to secure peace.

Levin praised Blair’s appointment as a significant honor for the university. “The appointment of Mr. Blair provides a tremendous opportunity for our students and our community,” he said. “As the world continues to become increasingly inter-dependent, it is essential that we explore how religious values can be channeled toward reconciliation rather than polarization. Mr. Blair has demonstrated outstanding leadership in these areas and is especially qualified to bring his perspective to bear.”

As a Howland Distinguished Scholar, former Prime Minister Blair joins a truly distinguished league. Former Howland Scholars have included the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, journalist Sir Alistair Cooke and stateswoman Indira Gandhi.
