MBA News: Columbia's Plan to Build, Chicago's Building of the Year, Tuck Manages Risk and GMAC Moves Overseas

Happy Monday! Round 1 deadlines are approaching, but life goes on as usual at the b-school campuses. Let’s check in on some of the news from the schools in the last week.

In New York, it seems Columbia University’s plan to expand into Harlem has cleared a major hurdle, making it more likely that the construction of the new home for Columbia Business School will proceed apace. Last week, University officials reached a deal with area residents that addresses a number of concerns, including sustainable development, affordable housing and open space. As part of the agreement, Columbia will donate $20M to an affordable housing fund and commit to opening a community resource center in the neighborhood. This center will provide area residents with information on construction plans, housing options, and job opportunities related to the project. Other commitments include a promise to plan open space such as parks and playgrounds into the project, while giving priority to neighborhood-based businesses when selecting retailers. For more on the new agreement, check out the press release from the Manhattan Borough President.

In other building news, the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business recently announced that the Charles M. Harper Center won the Office Building of the Year award from the Building Owners and Managers Association of Chicago, which recognizes excellence in commercial real estate. The Association rated the building highly on factors such as appearance, accessibility, responsiveness of the facilities staff and energy management systems – all of which contribute to students’ comfort and enjoyment of the building. The Harper Center is home to the Chicago GSB’s full-time program and features a striking 6-story central atrium, or “winter garden.” More information about the Harper Center can be found by taking Chicago’s virtual tour of their Hyde Park campus.

Later this week, Tuck’s Dartmouth campus will play host to senior information security officers from some of the world’s most successful companies. Gathered for a day-long series of workshops organized by Tuck’s Center for Digital Strategies and Institute for Information Infrastructure Protection, the event will focus on how companies can create “secure cultures” in which every employee protects against information security threats. The workshops will bring together respected academics and senior members of companies such as BJs, Cisco, Colgate-Palmolive, Dow Chemical, Eli Lilly, H&R Block, IBM, ING, Staples, and Time Warner Cable. One panel of note will feature executives from Facebook and Goldman Sachs discussing how their firms manage security risk. The event promises to be an interesting day for all participants, and is another great example of the ways in which business schools are constantly connecting with the corporate world to share best practices and new solutions.

Meanwhile, the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC) is looking to take advantage of the rapid rise in U.S.-style business education overseas to increase the use of the GMAT worldwide. The council recently filled two new executive level positions that will focus on increasing overseas membership in the organization. One position will be based at the GMAC’s main office in Virginia, while the other will work out of London. Currently over 160 GMAC member schools use the GMAT in their admissions process, but with 3,700 new business schools popping up worldwide in the last decade, the organization sees a rich opportunity to expand.

That’s the news for now! Keep an eye on this space for more news and tips throughout the week.
