Thursday, June 07, 2007 New INSEAD EMBA with Tsinghua University; EMBA Trends at Chicago, Kellogg, Wharton With the launch of the Tsinghua-INSEAD Dual Degree Executive MBA Programme, this week marks the beginning of new international opportunity in Executive MBA education. On Friday, 45 students from around the world will begin this new 18-month program with a kick-off at Beijing’s Tsinghua University, School of Economics and Management. The program will be composed of thirteen meetings in total, each four to six days in length, and will be held alternately at Tsinghua’s campus in Beijing and INSEAD’s Singapore campus. There will also be at least one meeting held at INSEAD’s main campus in Fontainebleau. The program will be taught by faculty from both programs, and students will graduate with a degree issued by both schools. In addition to combining the strengths of two schools, this new program is an interesting addition to the growing trend in EMBA programs offering opportunities to study at multiple campuses. In 1994, Chicago’s EMBA program expanded to include a London campus, and more recently a Singapore campus as well. Unlike the Tsinghua-INSEAD program, GSB students choose a primary location, but have opportunities to study at the other two during their time in the program. In 2001, Wharton added a remote campus as well. The school now offers a Wharton West option in downtown San Francisco for Silicon Valley executives who would prefer to avoid the commute to Philadelphia. Unlike the Tsinghua-INSEAD and Chicago options, Wharton’s multiple campuses have identical offerings – not only is the admissions committee and the curriculum identical, Wharton actually flies faculty members between coasts on a weekly basis. Most recently, the Kellogg-Miami EMBA program launched in January, 2006. Located just outside of the city in Coral Gables, this program offers a natural emphasis on Latin American markets and provides an alternative to the East-West orientation of many of the other competing programs. The growing number of campus options make these EMBA programs more accessible to the many busy professionals who must juggle their academic pursuits with responsibilities at work and at home. This trend is not simply about convenience, though. It also reflects the ever-increasing importance of international business, providing mid-career students firsthand exposure to a variety of economic settings. |
