Fridays from the Frontline

Everyone’s back from the Thanksgiving weekend and starting to count down the days – applicants towards notification and R2 deadlines, and current students to the end of the semester.

Several students had stories of Thanksgiving celebrations to share after the long weekend. Thanks to the IESE Thanksgiving dinner (hosted by NoellieBellie), Ashwyn is no longer a “Thanksgiving virigin.” In New York, Rubeo Boy hoped to find some good deals on Black Friday (the shopping day after Thanksgiving) and Nate_Johnson shared some wacky family traditions.

Applicant bloggers checked in this week from all stages of the b-school application process. AsianGal found the local Wharton information session helpful, even though it was directed more towards next year’s applicants than this year’s R2 crop. -tvu finally sat for the GMAT, but the result was not quite what he’d hoped for – we wish him luck on the planned retest after the holidays. December may be the month for news on applications, but so far ScareCrow is still waiting for news on interview invitations, a situation that GuyMBA is all too familiar with as he waits for news from Columbia. Meanwhile other applicants are searching high and low for any information that will help them get through the waiting. TJ is disappointed by the distinct lack of primary source information on HBS and Stanford interview invitations, while MBA Babe is looking for “signs” all over the internet – and even in the bottom of her tea mug! Although SuserMcLoser doesn’t have much to say on the status of her apps, she does have a fun list of the things she’s given up in order to focus on the MBA application process. Several of our applicant bloggers completed interviews this week, with Iday sharing a long talk over coffee with a Chicago alumnus and rungee582 having a great time at the HBS interview and class visit (after being bumped up to first class on the flight to Boston!).

Many current students have been hunkering down in preparation for upcoming finals, though a few wrote to bring us up-to-date on recent events on campus. AxeChick surfaces from the end of semester melee to give a wrap-up of the first semester and dispell some myths of b-school recruiting. Benny checks in with news of Tuck’s conferences, Wall Street treks, and fall midterms and LL had a busy few days at Wharton attending special talks by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and General Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff, and prepping for her first phone interview. After a busy Viking Week at INSEAD, Hallonman is now playing catch-up (and celebrating the 5,000th visit to his blog!), while Tim K. reports that the International Night at McCombs was a hit. In academic news, Karlito‘s finance exam at LBS is “done, over, finito,” diphThong is in the final week of classes at Chicago GSB before heading to Singapore, and JerryBlank offers some suggestions for first year elective courses Yale should offer.

Although many current students are sounding stressed at this time of year, a few actually wrote to say things just aren’t that bad. Angie has found this term at LBS relaxing when compared to her old job and Paxti wrote to say that the stress at LBS – and other MBA programs – is all about the choices.

That’s the blogging news for this week – tune in next week for more on interviews, applications, and end of semester events across the MBA blogosphere!
