Excerpt from the BW Chat

BWJACK: People can’t help wondering how the slow economy and bear market are affecting B-school prospects, so try this question… QUESTION: “Were applications down last year? By how much? What do you expect for next year?” CLEAR ADMIT: “The short answer is yes, application volume was down slightly last year. Most of the top schools saw a decrease on the order of 15%. But it’s important to remember that the decrease came off of historical highs for most of the top schools out there, and it’s also important to observe that the statistics of this year’s entering classes are the highest they’ve ever been (GMAT, GPA). So volume might be down but competition seems to be up.”

HBS Essays Now Available

Here are the essay questions for the 2004 HBS Application:

1. Discuss a recent leadership experience. Briefly outline the situation and then describe your role, how you were effective, and what you learned. (400-word limit) 2. What are your three most substantial accomplishments, and why do you view them as such? (600-word limit) 3. Describe a situation when you questioned your values and/or beliefs. (400-word limit) 4. What do you find most challenging about working with a group? (400-word limit? 5. What are your career aspirations, and how can an MBA help you reach them? Why now? (400-word limit) 6. What do you wish the MBA Admissions Board had asked you? (400-word limit)

A few notable changes here – despite the fact that many key themes remain. Essays 1, 2 and 5 are virtually the same as last year’s questions. Essays 3, 4 and 6 are new and should present some interesting challenges for applicants.
